Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
James 1:13-15 NKJV
Sin is conceived when we are drawn away by our desires. ( desire, a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen). We all have desires, some of them it doesn't look like they can take us away from the presence of God, but in the long run, they do because they shift our focus from God.
Example: my gift is giving, but if I have a desire, to be married, to be accepted by other people, and people to return favor those desires will conceive sin if they are not met, even if they are met they change my focus. My focus will no longer be on God.
These desires change your focus while still serving because the devil uses them to manipulate or counter everything that I do for God.
God can say give to a man, and I immediately think this could be my husband (that's a trap right there because if it does not happen I will think maybe God never even sent me to give in the first place, It was not the Holy Spirit that I heard).
Or maybe I give for acceptance or approval, or that one day they will return a favor, in my head I'm like now they will accept me, one day they will help me, that desire is creating an expectation from people (when my expectations are not met that's when I'm drawn away from the presence of God)which can only be met by God, whatever we do for God we must expect God. Then our focus will always be on God.
NB!
It's not wrong to have desires if they keep us in the presence of God. I believe the longer we stay in the presence of God, or seek God we will desire what God desires not what our flesh desire.
David is showing us what we should desire in psalm 19:7-13
1 . Law, testimony, commandments, and statues of the Lord
2 . Fear of the Lord,
3. Judgments of the LORD - more to be desired are they than gold(material things which draw us out of the presence of God).
Remember Jesus said first to seek the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added. In our service to the Lord are we seeking God? or are we seeking praise, approval acceptance, or our desires to be met by people and expecting God to bless us in our time frame, but using the name of the Lord?
We must be like Jesus who obeyed God even to the cross
Fortunately, God provided a solution for this in Corinthians
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
II Corinthians 10:4-5 NKJV
Since the devil uses our fleshly desires as weapons we must counter by the knowledge of God, bringing down every thought in captivity to the obedience of Christ. Like Jesus Christ did He answered the devil by saying a man can not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the Lord.
Prayer items.
1. God must bring to remembrance every sin that is making us not be fruitful.
2. We must ask God to forgive us for every sin that we can remember.
3. Ask God to always reveal the word to use when we are confronted with temptation or our desires so that we can put every thought associated with our temptation, and fleshly desires to the obedience of Christ.
3. Pray for ignorance and unbelief.
4. Pray to be obedient even when it's not favorable be humble like Jesus He obeyed unto the cross.
